Nail fungus or onychomycosis (OM) is an increasingly common nail infection, predominately caused by dermatophyte fungi. Fungal infections are contagious and can be trasmitted via direct skin-to-skin contact and through the shedding of diseased dead skin or nail cells.
You are more likely to develop a fungal nail infection if you are elderly, if there is presence of nail trauma, psoriassis or diabetes, by wearing occlusive footwear, regularly participating in sporting activities like running or swimming, or have a history of fungal infection elsewhere on the body.
When nail fungus invades the area under the nail plate, the nail can become severely deformed, thick, discoloured (yellow, white or brown) and brittle. The adjacent soft tissue may also become inflamed.
