Onychauxis

Onychauxis or onychauxic nails is a nail disorder that leads to abnormal thickening of the fingernails or toenails. It may eventually lead to curing or discolouration of the nails. As a result of the thickening, this may force the nail plate (the part of the nail you paint) to separate from the nail bed. The thickening can increase vulnerability to a fungal infection.

We offer safe nail care, which includes cutting the nail with a clipper and filling with a an electric podiatry drill. Onychauxis does not have a standardised treatment. It largely depends on factors such as pain, self-consciousness, general aesthetic of the nails and underlying conditions.

How do you know if it is Onychauxis?

Onychauxic nails generally have the following symptoms: abnormal thickening of the nail, separation of the nail plate from the nail bed, yellow or white appearance, red or black colouring if left untreated, brittle crumbling around the edges of the nail, and or pain.
